The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah has warned that the world is in trouble if the challenge of youth unemployment is not sought and worked out.
Oulanyah made the remarks during the youth round table discussions at the on-going 64th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) at Speke Resort Munyonyo, in Kampala.
Oulanya said that with terrorism becoming a global threat, the situation may get worse with majority of vulnerable and unemployed young people providing a recruitment ground for terrorists.
“Unless we find solutions that can remove this category of people from the hands of the terrorists, we are in trouble” Oulanyah warned.
He said terrorist groups have a stockpile of young people to recruit from because they are vulnerable,they go hungry and yet they are educated. He said for as long as the young people whose parents have spent money in universities remain unemployed, the world is not safe.
He said there is need for the discussions to come up with a recommendation that speaks to this problem and ensure all groups of people both unemployed and underemployed get into some kind of gainful employment.
He said unless there is a solution to this challenge, it will be very difficult to stop the youth from joining these kind of groups that are ready to pay them in dollars to execute their evil agenda.
Meanwhile the youth roundtable discussion which was chaired by the Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah came up with some recommendations to curb the challenge of unemployment in youths among Commonwealth countries some of which included reforming the education system to provide practical skills to young people, provision of fiscal incentives for business that create job opportunities for youths, and reforming laws and policies that relate to employment among others.
