In a special session, Parliament honored the life and services of Simon Peter Aleper, the former NRM Deputy Chairman in Karamoja and Moroto Municipality MP, who tragically passed away in a car accident on Tuesday night. The incident has sparked concerns over road safety and the need for swift action to prevent such accidents.

The body of the late Aleper was brought to Parliament, where it was received by Speaker Anita Among, Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, and other dignitaries. The session was attended by Vice President Jessica Alupo, Prime Minister Robina Nabbanja, and NRM National Deputy Chairman Alhajj Moses Kigongo, among others.

Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa praised Aleper’s contributions to the country, highlighting his dedication to the development of Karamoja region.

However, MPs from Karamoja expressed frustration over the delay in arresting the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident, despite the presence of cameras on the roads. They urged the Minister of Internal affairs to provide updates on the investigation.

Vice President Alupo offered condolences to the nation and the NRM, describing Aleper as a champion of justice who fought for his people without hesitation. She called for a joint effort between the police and the Ministry of Transport to identify the driver and prevent future accidents.

Prime Minister Nabbanja presented a motion recognizing Aleper’s services, praising his efforts to develop Karamoja region, including his recent appeal to residents to donate land for a cement factory.

The motion was seconded by Kalungu West MP Joseph Sewungu, who challenged the government to address the root causes of accidents, including poor road lighting and potholes.

Karamoja MPs remembered Aleper for his commitment to the region’s development and requested government support for the education of his seven orphaned children. Aleper’s passing at the age of 50 has left a void in the community, and his legacy will be remembered and honored.
