The Woman Member of Parliament for Yumbe District, Naima Melsa Gule Avako, has called on women across Uganda to confidently embrace leadership positions and actively participate in national development.
Avako made the call during a breakfast meeting at Parliament held to commemorate International Women’s Day on Friday, 6 March 2026.
Today Uganda is celebrating International Women’s Day today, Sunday, 8 March 2026, at the Kololo Independence Grounds under the theme, “Scaling up investment to accelerate access to justice for all women and girls in Uganda.”
She encouraged women not to shy away from opportunities to serve and advocate for their communities.
“I appeal to women to identify themselves wherever they are. They should not feel shy. They should stand up and embrace their role,” she said.
Avako also expressed gratitude to President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for what she described as creating a political environment that enables women to participate in leadership through the ruling National Resistance Movement.
She further thanked the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, for organizing the Women’s Day breakfast meeting at Parliament, which she described as an important platform for women leaders.
Avako emphasized that women have the capacity to lead and contribute meaningfully to society just like men.
“As women, we should feel proud because nature has made us flowers and we are now leaders. Let us show people that we are capable,” she added.
