Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, who also serves as the NRM 2nd National Vice Chairperson (Female), this afternoon unveiled a group of 30 independent legislators who have expressed interest in cooperating with the NRM to advance both party and national interests.
Speaking during a meeting at the National Resistance Movement Secretariat, the Speaker emphasized that while the legislators remain legally independent, they are politically aligned with the ruling party.
“Legally, you are independent, but politically, you are NRM,” she stated.
She assured the MPs that those who formalize cooperation with the party will enjoy equal benefits, including access to leadership positions and participation in key party activities.
The Speaker further revealed that the group—drawn from different parts of the country—will be integrated into the party’s broader agenda, with assurances of support and inclusion.
“You are in the right place. You are at home,” she added.
Meanwhile, the party’s Director of Legal Services, Enock Barata, clarified that the process is still at the expression of interest stage, not formal agreement.
“What you are doing now is an expression of interest to enter into a Memorandum of Understanding with the party. You are not crossing, but indicating your intention to work with the party during your term of office,” he explained.
Barata added that the submitted expressions of interest will guide the preparation of formal MoUs and invitations for an official function where the agreements will be executed.
“We take those who are willing to work with us—we cannot force anyone,” he noted.
The development signals growing structured cooperation between independent legislators and the ruling party.
