Police in Kampala have arrested a suspect in connection with a series of motor vehicle number plate thefts reported in the Maganjo policing area.
According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, several motorists reported in January 2026 that unknown individuals were stealing their number plates and leaving behind a telephone contact demanding UGX 500,000 for their recovery.

Owoyesigyire said that on March 12, 2026, at about 2:00am, police foot patrol teams arrested Mugerwa Umaru, 29, at Mau Jinja–Kaloli Road in Maganjo B.

“At the time of arrest, the suspect was found in possession of suspected breaking implements, papers bearing the telephone contact used in the extortion scheme, and a SIM card linked to the same number,” Owoyesigyire said.

He added that the suspect reportedly admitted involvement in the thefts and led police officers to the recovery of 17 stolen number plates hidden in bushes in Jinja Kaloli and Kilokole Zone in Kawempe.
The suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Police have advised motorists to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious incidents.

Authorities have warned motorists not to pay the criminals, but instead follow the official replacement procedure through the Uganda Police Force, the Ministry of Works and Transport, and the Uganda Revenue Authority.
