Fred Bangumya Rwakaizi, a lawyer, has gained backing from several senior National Resistance Movement (NRM) figures as he seeks the party’s endorsement in the upcoming East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) by-election.
‎
‎Among those reported to support his bid is Mawogola North MP-elect, Godfrey Aine Kaguta, also known as Sodo.
‎The by-election follows the exit of former EALA representatives James Kakooza and Denis Namara, who were elected to Uganda’s 12th Parliament in January 2026.
‎
‎The NRM called for expressions of interest from candidates, requiring submission of application letters and updated curricula vitae by March 25, 2026.
‎
‎Rwakaizi is campaigning on a platform of regional integration under the slogan “We Are Better Together.”
‎The party is expected to vet and endorse candidates before forwarding names to Parliament for election to the regional assembly.
