African leaders have been urged to urgently enact laws that preserve African values and cultures, in order to promote home-grown solutions and strengthen the continent’s sovereignty.
While meeting a delegation of parliamentarians from Ghana, Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among cited Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Law as an example, saying African problems require African solutions.
She encouraged the delegation, which is in Uganda on a benchmarking visit ahead of hosting the 4th Session of the African Region Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family, Preservation of African Values and Sovereignty, not to waver in the face of critics who may oppose such legislation.
Among asked the team, led by Ghana’s Second Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the Organising Committee, Andrew Asimah Amoako, to champion respect for African values and traditions.
She said this would yield political dividends for leaders just as it was witnessed in the recent election of President Yoweri Museveni but also this will benefit the African citizens.
Among noted that the future of our people is in us, the leaders. As we fight and preserve the values, you must know that there are detractors out there.
”For instance, we’ve had a scenario where we passed the anti-homosexuality law. I was sanctioned, but I’m still alive and proud of what I did. If we do not sit on a round table like this and have these problems solved, nobody is going to come from anywhere to solve them”-Among
