UNICEF has condemned recent violent attacks against children in Uganda, describing them as “deeply shocking” and a violation of children’s fundamental rights

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Dr Robin Nandy, the UNICEF Representative to Uganda, expressed profound sorrow over the brutal killing of four toddlers at a childcare centre in Gaba, Kampala, and the assault on seven students at a secondary school in Apac District.

Nandy extended condolences to the affected families, saying UNICEF stands in solidarity with parents who lost their children and those whose children are recovering from injuries and trauma.
“Every child in Uganda has the fundamental right to learn, play, and grow in environments that are safe and protective,” he said, emphasizing that schools and early childhood centres must remain safe spaces for children.

UNICEF condemned the attacks as a threat to national security and child protection, calling for urgent action to prevent similar incidents. The agency reiterated that schools should never be targets of violence.

The organisation also pledged support to the Government of Uganda and partners, including the Ministry of Education and Sports, in providing psychosocial care to affected families and strengthening child protection systems.
UNICEF reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all children in Uganda can access education in safety and dignity.
