Opposition female Members of Parliament have today petitioned the Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among regarding the brutal arrests meted on them at different events organized to celebrate International Women’s Day in their respective districts.

Female MPs want the speaker of parliament to lead them in a demonstration to show displeasure over the continued violation of rights for opposition female lawmakers.

Addressing a press conference at parliament while in cladded black gomesis, MPs castigated actions and conduct of the security personnel under the command of the Resident District Commissioners (RDCs) which are made to block them from interfacing with their constituents.

Victims of brutality include; Joyce Bagala(DWR Mityana), Kaaya Christine Nakimwero (Kiboga District Woman MP), Florence Kabugho (Kasese), Betty Ethel Naluyima (Wakiso), Joan Acom Alobo (Soroti City) and Asinansi Nyakato (Hoima City) with most recent being Suzan Mugabi, the woman representative of Buvuma District who is still nursing wounds.

Female legislators want the speaker of parliament Anita Among to lead them in a demonstration to show dissatisfaction over the violation of the rights of women and the threat to their lives which also violates the Constitution.

They also demanded that Ministers for Presidency, Internal Affairs, and Gender present comprehensive reports to the House detailing their concerns and what they have done in this gross violation of the rights of women and the Constitution. They also want security officers and RDCs/RCCs involved in the assault of all the affected MPs to be prosecuted personally before the courts of law.
