Vatican City, Rome — The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, and the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa, are currently in Vatican City, Rome, representing His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni at the funeral of Pope Francis.

The funeral, set to taking place at St. Peter’s Square, has drawn several world leaders, including U.S. President Donald Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and members of the British royal family among others .

Speaker Among, a devout Catholic, has maintained a longstanding relationship with the Vatican. She has visited the Holy See on eight occasions, four of which included private audiences with Pope Francis. Her most recent visit, in August last year, was especially personal, as she presented her newborn twins to the Pope for his blessings.

Deputy Speaker Tayebwa, who has been a key figure in Uganda’s Parliament since 2022, joined Speaker Among in paying their last respects to Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica this morning. Together, they joined thousands of mourners from around the world in celebrating the life and legacy of a pontiff who championed compassion, justice, and unity.

The Ugandan delegation also includes the State Minister for Finance, Hon. Henry Musasizi; NWSC Deputy Managing Director, Dr. Sylvia Arinaitwe; Soroti City East MP, Hon. Edmund Ariko; Iganga Municipality MP, Hon. Peter Mugema; Kibanda North County MP, Hon. Linos Ngompek; and Uganda’s Ambassador to Berlin, Stephen Mubiru.
