UNEB Releases 2020 UACE RESULTS

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has today released the 2020 Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) examination results indicating an improved performance compared to 2019 despite Covid-19 disruptions.

Female students performed better than males in the majority of subjects whereas Three districts and Luzira prison failed to register a single candidate for the 2020 UACE exams.

Ninety-eight thousand three hundred ninety-two (98,392) candidates registered for the 2020 UACE examination from 1,952 centers compared to 104,476 candidates from 2,094 centers in 2019.

This was blamed on covid-19 factors which disabled some private schools reopen after the lockdown, students taking menial jobs, rising cases of pregnancies, and early marriages among other causes.

Candidates defied the odds of Covid-19 and put up a better performance compared to 2019 results. 68013 candidates obtained a minimum of two principal passes compared to 65723 candidates who secured at least two principals in 2019. 19015 passed with one principal pass and 9616 obtained one subsidiary pass.

796 candidates failed completely compared to 1,433 who failed in 2019. 6% of candidates who registered for exams didn’t turn up for examination. Luzira prison didn’t register a single candidate for UACE as well as three districts of Nabilatuk, Nakapiripit, and Madi-Okello.

Although Female students outshined males in majority subjects, UNEB indicated with concerns the low number of female students who register for sciences.

However, Uneb has not given up on the 2021 exams despite the prevailing lockdown on schools. The UNEB Executive director Dan Odong revealed plans to register candidates for 2021 exams immediately after the lockdown.

The UNEB chairperson Mary Akwakol decried the covid-19 induced budget cuts which have seen the board lose 41% of its budget which translates to 55bn shillings. The budget cuts affected activities of preparing and conducting exams.

UNEB has withheld results for over 100 candidates pending investigation over alleged cases of malpractice.
