The speaker of parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga has expressed strong frustrations over the failure by environmentalists in Uganda to walk the talk of saving the environment.
Officiating at the national conference on youth participation and contribution to the climate change bill 2020 today in Kampala, Kadaga re-echoed the high levels of no commitment from the stakeholders towards saving the environment saying this will leave no mark to the so many campaigns developed in the country to save the environment.
She now urged the youths in Uganda to play a huge role in saving the environment as this will help leave a mark of their work by planting trees as they mark great memories like birthdays, weddings, introductions and deaths.
The chairperson of the parliamentary forum on climate change, Hon.Lawrence Ssonga is challenging govt to always find alternative energy solutions for communities as they construct power dams in the country.
Youth in Uganda under the youth Go green are asking the education ministry to consider including climate change issues in the country’s education curriculum.
However, the executive director Youth Go green Edwin Muhumuza proposes that if a bachelor’s or even a master is included in the curriculum will be of good help in enriching the youth on issues to do with climate change.
He reminds Ugandans of the impacts of climate change to Ugandan and its communities thus asking Ugandans and youths to take the lead front in the fight against climate change effects.
Meanwhile, the country director Oxfam Uganda Francis Shanty Odokorach said that climate change has contributed to fueling poverty among vulnerable Ugandans mainly the rural communities, women and girls.
And its upon this that they call on parliament to fast track the passing of the climate change bill into law before the current parliament closes
The bill before parliament seeks to lay guidelines and regulation on how better Uganda can address issues of climate change among them reducing on greenhouse gas emissions among others.
