Human Rights Committee Tasked To Probe Torture
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament Anita Among has instructed the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights to go on the ground and investigate allegations of gross Human Rights violations by security operatives.
She has asked the committee to present their report in 45 days.
The acting Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon Muruli Mukasa today present a statement on reports of alleged human rights violation by state security operatives distancing the government from condoning torture The Minister says torture is neither a policy of government nor a method of interrogation.
Hon. Muruli Mukasa promised parliament a speedy trial of the two incarcerated MPs Muhammad Segirinya and Allan Sewanyana saying investigations in the matter were completed and the two been committed for trial in the High Court at Masaka.
MPs condemned the escalating cases of torture, arbitrary arrests, illegal detention among others, and tasked the government to pronounce itself and redeem its image.
The presiding speaker Anita Among directed the minister Muluuli Mukasa to stop lamentation and bring to book perpetrators of torture who are still at large.
The deputy speaker tasked the chairperson of the Human Rights committee to work with the Minister of Security and other relevant agencies and investigate cases of human rights violations across the country in 45 days.
Last week Opposition stormed out of parliament and vowed not to come back for 14 days due to increased cases of torture.
