Fred Bangumya Rwakaizi, a lawyer, has gained backing from several senior National Resistance Movement (NRM) figures as he seeks the party’s endorsement in the upcoming East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) by-election.
Among those reported to support his bid is Mawogola North MP-elect, Godfrey Aine Kaguta, also known as Sodo.
The by-election follows the exit of former EALA representatives James Kakooza and Denis Namara, who were elected to Uganda’s 12th Parliament in January 2026.
The NRM called for expressions of interest from candidates, requiring submission of application letters and updated curricula vitae by March 25, 2026.
Rwakaizi is campaigning on a platform of regional integration under the slogan “We Are Better Together.”
The party is expected to vet and endorse candidates before forwarding names to Parliament for election to the regional assembly.
