Lukwago Petitions Parliament Over Covid-Relief

By Admin

The Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago has petitioned parliament to intervene in the Covid relief program to ensure that Kampala is given a priority.

Up to now the vulnerable poor people in Kampala are on the verge of starvation as they wait for mobile money cash from the government. KCCA is also pushing for a special budget to fight the second wave Covid-19.

The disbursement of Covid-19 Relief aid cash to the vulnerable poor kicked off yesterday, but Kampala which is worst hit by the Covid-19 lockdown is yet to receive its share. This has disappointed leaders in Kampala and today they convened a meeting at parliament to condemn the dragging of emergency response.

The Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago together with other division Mayors today petitioned parliament through the leader of Opposition to intervene and put the government to task to clean the mess delaying relief distribution.

Lukwago asked parliament to allocate a special budget for KCCA to manage the second wave of Covid-19. KCCA was not considered in the 600bn supplementary budget which was approved recently by the cabinet for an emergency response to Covid-19 although other local governments were allocated 53bn to fight Covid-19.

This week ministry of health presented to parliament a staggering budget of 1.7tn to manage a resurgence of Covid-19 between June 2021 to July 2022, but KCCA wants a portion of it before it’s appropriated.

Currently, KCCA has no hospital under it’s its management since the central government took charge of Kiruddu and Kawempe Hospital. This has concerned city leaders and they now want the ministry of health to surrender the two facilities saying it has mismanaged them.
