ROKO Commits to Complete Renovation of Mulago in 12 Months

Health Committee Query Stalled Renovation Works at Mulago

ROKO Construction Company has committed to completing stalled renovation works at Mulago Hospital in 12 months after receiving a Shs202bn.

This was in the Health Committee of Parliament where MPs were questioning the capacity of ROKO to complete Mulago hospital renovation works that have stalled for years.

The parliament’s committee of Health Committee today interfaced with officials of ROKO constructions and questioned the capacity of Roko Construction Company to undertake the Shs13.819Bn renovation works at Mulago National Referral Hospital. The committee was skeptical about ROKO having failed to complete works under the contract that ROKO got in 2014 with the target of completion in 2016.

In July this year, Parliament approved the proposed government purchase of 150,000 preference shares in Roko Construction Limited worth 202 billion Shillings. According to ROKO this bailout has boosted the liquidity of the company to complete all its running contracts including Mulago hospital and Parliament chambers building.

ROKO officials committed to completing renovation works at Mulago hospital in one year despite the fact that their contract with the Ministry of Health is for 16 months.

The health committee is concerned that delayed works at Mulago have frustrated service delivery, as many machines can’t operate before the installation of air conditioners and other installations.

Meanwhile the managing director of ROKO Construction Company Jean Mann Koehler has attributed, ROKO’s woes to its competitors whom he claims have been fighting the company because of illicit its petition for business.

Roko Construction Company was awarded the new contract to complete the renovation of Mulago in October and the scope of works involved carrying out Civil works Shs2.094Bn, Air conditioning Shs1.309Bn, Electrical installation Shs1.361Bn, plumbing works Shs1.420Bn, medical gases Shs717.335M, ICT installations Shs2.467Bn and other items totaling to Shs13.819Bn. However up to date, works are yet to be completed, yet the Ministry of Health that oversaw the award of the contract went ahead and struck another deal with Roko Construction.
