The Member of Parliament for Obongi Constituency, Hon. Dr. George Didi Bhoka, has held a meeting with the Obongi District business community to discuss the challenges and opportunities within the local business sector. The meeting, held at Gill County Inn, brought together a range of stakeholders, including representatives from the Obongi District Farmers Association, the Obongi District Chamber of Commerce, Emyooga SACCO Chairpersons, and PDM SACCO Chairpersons.

During the meeting, each group was given an opportunity to share their challenges and success stories.

Leaders from the District Farmers Association highlighted the benefits of membership, such as access to affordable farming practices and engagement in diversified farming activities, including beekeeping and fishing. However, they also pointed out significant challenges, such as the frequent breakdown of tractors, which hampers farming activities.

Emyooga SACCO leaders reported that the Emyooga initiative was introduced in Obongi in 2021, with 18 SACCOs each receiving UGX 30 million. While there have been challenges in loan recovery, 11 SACCOs have since received a second disbursement. Others are still pending due to various issues. The leaders appealed to the MP to advocate for the annual disbursement of Emyooga funds in Parliament.

PDM SACCO leaders expressed concerns over the frequent changes in PDM operational guidelines and issues related to office management.

Awomi Sam Longa, Treasurer of the Obongi District Farmers Association, attributed many of the challenges to opportunism, a lack of focus, and weak mobilization efforts by both members and district technical staff.

In response, Hon. Dr. Bhoka emphasized the importance of business literacy, risk management, and adopting a wealth mindset. He encouraged the business community to understand and apply the “4Ps” of business—Product, Price, Person, and Promotion.

Mr. Opigo Johnson, the District Production Officer, informed attendees about a proposal he developed to establish a fish smoking machine at the Rupo land site in Gimara Sub-county. He explained that the initiative could not only add value to local fish products but also contribute to reducing deforestation by offering an alternative to traditional smoking methods.

Representing the LC5 Chairperson, Hon. Jumbo Ahmed urged community members to engage with technical offices and work collaboratively to achieve shared development goals.

Also in attendance was the District Tourism Officer, Amen Elizabeth, who highlighted the untapped potential in the tourism sector. She encouraged district elders and community leaders to explore and promote local tourist sites.

The meeting served as an important platform for dialogue between the business community and local leaders. Through collaboration and continued support, the community is well-positioned to overcome existing challenges and harness available opportunities for growth and sustainable development.
